The Power and Performance of the 2016 Mazda CX-5 SUV

2016 Mazda CX-5 Side
Available in three trim levels – Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring – the 2016 Mazda CX-5 Crossover SUV offers performance and fuel efficiency befitting your driving habits. Whether you live in an urban or rural area, the CX-5 accommodates by offering a choice of two capable drivetrains and spectacular mpg ratings. To ensure you get the most power out of every drop of fuel, the CX-5 relies on Mazda’s refined SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY. Look below to see what makes the CX-5 SUV such a reliable performer!

Two Engine and Transmission Options

The CX-5 Sport is powered by a SKYACTIV®-G 2.0L DOHC 4-cylinder engine that dishes out 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Optional for the Sport and standard on the Touring and Grand Touring, the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L DOHC 4-cylinder engine is capable of 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0L comes connected to a SKYACTIV®-MT 6-speed manual transmission, while the power of the 2.5L is harnessed by a SKYACTIV®-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission. Manual-shift and Sport modes for the automatic let drivers manually change gears and ramp up the CX-5 Crossover’s athletic capabilities at will.

Drivetrains and Fuel-Efficiency

2016 Mazda CX5 RedTo meet your traction and fuel-efficiency needs, the CX-5 offers two drivetrains: front- and all-wheel drive. The optional all-wheel drive system is by no means average. Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD® cleverly allocates engine torque to the appropriate wheels, based on driving and environmental factors. Even a few stray pieces of gravel are enough to send the system in motion. With front-wheel drive and the 2.5L engine, the 2016 CX-5 earns an EPA-estimated 26 mpg city/33 mpg highway rating, while the all-wheel drive variation nets a 24 mpg city/30 mpg highway score.

SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY is founded on the belief that excellent fuel-efficiency should never equal poor performance. Mazda vehicles – the CX-5 included – are carefully designed, from body to powertrain, to harmonize power and fuel economy. Unlike your run-of-the-mill internal combustion engines, SKYACTIV®-G 2.0L and 2.5L engines offer higher compression ratios – meaning they’re able to compress the air and fuel inside their cylinders more efficiently. This results in fewer trips to the gas pumps, saving you time and money!
